Inspiration and Change for the Day!

Inspiration of the Day:

Sometimes, we get the most from giving without receiving. In Mali, villagers have embraced this idea for centuries in their vibrant gift economy, called 'dama'. It encourages Malians to maintain social connections with family, friends, and complete strangers, by providing goods and services with no expectation of a return gift. Instead, the villagers understand that a gift will be "paid forward," and that the individual sacrifice will make the community as a whole stronger and better connected. In a nation where the government provides minimal services, Mali's dama protects the poor and the sick, helping those ignored by a traditional economy. Read more about the success of this gift economy.

Today's Tip: Be The Change: Give a gift to a stranger without expecting anything in return.

  1. I always love giving someone a gift that they don't know where it came from. I like sneaking around to do it. I want them to thank GOD, not me.

    Blessings, andrea

  2. Giving others blessing in the Name of the Lord, just makes it more meaningful. I love the way His blessings work: when given away, the more it grows...That's a great story sister Kat! Have a great day and God bless you!

  4. Kat, this sounds to me like a wonderful way to live. I also just read your "Going the Extra Mile" post and am amazed. It reminds me of a time when Daddy found a pocketbook with $6000 in it inside a phonebooth at the Ohio State Fair. This was in the early 50's when that was a whole lot of money. He took it to the Information Booth where there was a woman who was quite distraught. After she was able to identify the purse as hers, Daddy was able to personally return the money to her. She of course, offered to give him a reward which he declined, in spite of the fact that we most certainly could have used the money. He often speaks of this and everytime he does there is a look of both pride and humility in his eyes. Thank you for sharing both of these wonderful examples of Christian giving.

    God Bless,
    Mimmy
